Your New Years Resolution – Safer Driving
2019 is in full swing, if you haven’t set a resolution yet…consider actively becoming a safer driver in 2019. Every time you get behind the wheel of your car, you are operating a piece of heavy machinery, and it must be treated as such. Over 40,000 people died in car accidents in 2017, 4.6 million were seriously injured and the monetary value of loss from car accidents is in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Knowing these facts, everyone should make an effort to be a safer driver this year…want to know how you can improve? Here are our top tips for safe driving.
Top 4 Tips For Safe Driving in 2019
1. Drive According To The Weather
Always drive for the current weather conditions, do not treat driving in all weather the same. If you are driving in rainy, or snowy conditions – slow down. If you are driving in the dark make sure your headlights are on. If the weather is really bad, consider if it’s really urgent to be driving or if you can wait until conditions pass.
- Use Your Headlights: in conditions such as fog, rain, snow…or it’s just dark at night. Make sure you are using your headlights. Not only do your headlights help you see what’s on the road better, but they also help other cars on the road to see you.
- Keep Your Windows Clear: it’s a no brainer if your windows are covered in snow, ice, dirt or other particulates you won’t be able to see out of them. Always take the time to fully clean off your windows.
- Slow Down: if road conditions are less than ideal, such as snow, ice or rain…slow down! Always keep a cushion of 1-2 cars ahead of you so that you have enough room to stop safely.

2. Don’t Drive Under the Influence or Tired
Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or while tired is one of the leading causes of death on road. Smart drivers know that you need a clear head to drive safely. With services like Uber and Lyft, there is no reason to be on the road while impaired. If you are driving on a long road trip and are starting to get sleepy, utilize rest areas along the way for a quick nap.
3. Eliminate Distractions
We are all guilty of giving in to distractions while driving every now and then – however driving while distracted is one of the leading causes of accidents. If you are driving your focus should be entirely on driving and your surroundings. Make sure you aren’t distracted while driving by avoiding:
- Texting While Driving
- Making Phone Calls While Driving
- Having the Radio Turned Too Loud
- Having Loose Pets in The Car
- Eating While Driving
- Reaching for Dropped Items
