What Do My Car’s Dashboard Warning Lights Mean?

AAMCO Utah • Oct 11, 2018

Don’t Get Overwhelmed By Your Cars Indicator Symbols

Cars are full of electronics and indicators to help us keep track of what’s happening under the hood. This is all so you can take care of a problem before it gets much worse. However, with how complicated cars have become, it may be difficult to keep track of what each symbol means. These illuminated hieroglyphics each have a purpose and can range from simply indicating an activate feature or showing that your automobile has a serious problem.

Some of these symbols may have altered designs or have slightly different indications, so be sure to consult your owner’s manual if you have any questions about your specific vehicle. When in doubt, have a professional check it out. So, if you’re having any reservations about your vehicle’s dashboard lights,  schedule an appointment online today at an AAMCO Utah location near you. We will make sure your car is in tip top shape to drive.

What do the colors mean?

Each warning light is color-coded to let you know the severity of the issue. A red flashing light means you need to pull over immediately, because driving in this state can cause expensive damage to your vehicle or have serious consequences. There are typically three dashboard light colors: yellow, orange, and red. Once in a blue moon, there may be blue or green indicators as well.

Orange or red symbols are generally the most severe and mean that you should pull over as soon as safely possible and drive cautiously to determine what is happening. Generally, yellow lights are less serious issues but can grow quickly into a major problem if it’s ignored for too long. Schedule a service appointment at your closest locally owned AAMCO for your vehicle as soon as possible.

Engine Temperature Warning Light

No, it’s not a pirate ship sneaking by with its sails down. It means that your engine is too hot and may be low on coolant. Letting your coolant levels get to low, or run out entirely may put your vehicle at risk for extremely serious and expensive damages. If you are having problems with your cooling system, the expert mechanics at AAMCO
will get you running cool again fast!

Tire Pressure Warning Light

It’s definitely not a Buckingham Palace guard letting you know that you just scored a field goal. It means that your tire pressure may be too high or too low in one or more of your tires. Checking your tire pressure is incredibly important if you want to maintain long lasting and working tires, improve fuel efficiency and mileage. Properly inflated tires also improve thread wear and will save you money in the long run. Need help checking your tire pressure or maintaining proper inflation levels? Stop by an AAMCO Utah location near you for advice and assistance!

Oil Pressure Warning Light

I wish this meant I was about to get three wishes from the genie trapped in this lamp. Sadly, you’re going to wish you had fixed this problem earlier if you ignore this light. This one means that your engine is running low on oil or there’s an issue with your car’s oil pressure system, such as a degraded hose. Oil keeps your engine lubricated and running smoothly, and this light is telling you that the oil is not doing its job. This can lead to potentially expensive damages, so don’t ignore this light!

Engine Warning Light

We may all live in a yellow submarine, but this light actually can turn on for a variety of issues. Some of these problems include: O2 Sensor requiring replacement, needing new Spark Plug Wires, a Mass Air Flow Sensor Malfunction, Loose Gas Cap, and many more. These can be serious problems and if your check engine light blinks on it’s important to come to your nearest AAMCO Utah service center so we can run a diagnostic scan to diagnose the problem.

Brake System Warning Light

This light can be an indicator of a major issue as well. It can indicate a problem with your brake system or a shortage of brake fluid. No matter what the issue is, your brakes are one of the most important safety features of your car. If this light starts flashing on your dashboard, get off the road and get it checked immediately for your safety. Make an appointment today if you see this light on or if you have any trepidations about your car’s stopping time.

Battery Alert Light

It may look like that limited edition Math Lego block, but it actually means that your car’s charging system is short of power and you are running unsustainably on battery. It may also mean that you have an issue with your car’s electrical system. This may be a problem with the alternator, battery, drive belt, or cables and may lead to your car eventually running out of power and stalling.
